The acronym VOIP is composed of the following words: “Voice Over Internet Protocol”. It is a technology that allows you to transfer voice or multimedia content on Internet. The basic principle of the VOIP server is to use the IP protocol to transmit the multimedia data in the form of data packets over Internet.

This IP protocol is one of the protocols of the network layer responsible for segmenting the digitized data and sending it to the network. Or simpler, the analog data voice is converted into digital data in the form of IP packets, which are then compressed and transmitted over the network. It is also important to point out that the VoIP server does not use a single protocol, but a whole set of protocols, methods and technologies that can digitize and transmit audio and multimedia data in general.

Basic structure of the VOIP server

In order to understand the VOIP concept properly, it is essential to analyze the details and smaller elements that make up this technology. Today, the VOIP is still classified as a new technology and due to this fact, it does not yet have a unique standard. In the implementation of this technology, each engineer contributes to his own standards and functionalities to achieve a solution. The base is still the three main protocols, that are H323, SIP and MGCP.

The basic VOIP protocols

For an IP-based connection to be established, it is necessary to use three other main protocols, which are:

# H323

H.323 is a standard protocol that belongs to ITU (International Telecommunication Union) that has been established to allow the activation, management and termination of a media session. It also defines a range of protocols that are used to provide all types of multimedia communication in networks.

# Yep

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is another standard protocol of Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It also has the main functions of establishing, modifying and terminating media sessions. It is very similar to H.323 and it even seems to replace it gradually because it is easier to use than H.323.

# MGCP

This other protocol, the Media Gateway Control Protocol, is used to control the multimedia gateways that provide the conversion of multimedia data between IP networks and the switched telephone network.

Benefits of VOIP technology

This technology, which continues to innovate in the field of communication, has many advantages. The perfect test is its application in popular softwares such as Skype, WhatsApp, Viber and Google Talk.

# Reduction of telecommunications cost

This is the first benefit of this technology. With VOIP, the infrastructure required for the transfer of voice messages is minimal compared to the many services provided. Thanks to VOIP, you can access many services in the same channel of Internet network at a reduced price.

# Better flexibility

VOIP offers the possibility of migrating from analog to digital in a very efficient and simple way thanks to the usefulness of Internet.

# Many accessible services

Data digitization provides access to all types of services that can be performed over Internet. In order to name some of them, belonging to a wider range of services: Internet calls, real-time dialogues, multimedia file transfers, non-real time discussion forums, visiting web pages.

# A commencement to other technological innovations:

Internet is very well structured and suitable for many future applications. Its set of well-designed protocols and techniques, together with developments based on data digitization, makes this platform highly functional and scalable for future applications.
