Although it is still used today, newer technologies like VoIP have been introduced to improve its features and even provide an alternative method of communication. VoIP and PBX differ in various ways but the two can be integrated into the VoIP PBX also known as IP PBX or VoIP with PBX. We will discuss the features of these telephone systems.
The PBX Phone System
PBX systems are analog phone systems that function through a line-to-line connection via an exchange network. The major advantage of a PBX system is its cost-saving benefit. When used in a company, employees would share one main line with an extension for each of them.

Since then, VoIP has remarkably advanced, thanks to the internet and it has truly reformed the way we make and receive calls.
VoIP differs from PBX in the way they connect users for making and receiving calls. Unlike a PBX system, a VoIP system does this over the internet. Firstly, the analog voice signals are converted into digital data and sent over the internet. This is then converted back to analog voice signals at the receiving end. Furthermore, an internet connection and a connection device (such as a phone or a computer) are required for the process.
VoIP offers a lot of benefits over PBX but it also has its downsides. Some of the benefits of VoIP over PBX include ease of configuration and flexibility, lower overall costs, etc. However, since VoIP relies on the internet and because the connection is shared across several users, it is less reliable than the PBX.
VoIP with PBX – The IP PBX System
Obviously, the two phone systems have various benefits and downsides. However, their features can be pooled to offer a better and richer experience. This is the concept upon which it is developed.This functions like the traditional PBX system but it does so through the internet or intranet rather than through a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). This makes it more cost-effective for the business. To save more costs, most companies prefer to go for a hosted IP PBX system rather than an in-office system.
The main advantage is that you can access and connect to the phone system from anywhere in the world, provided you have an internet connection. Furthermore, you or anyone in your company does not have to be in a specific location to make calls that show your company number. It is also possible to access additional features or extensions on the VoIP PBX. This is mostly available in a hosted service but it can equally be available in an in-office VoIP containing PBX.
In conclusion, most companies are choosing VoIP along with PBX over the traditional PBX or VoIP. This is due to the ease and benefits IP PBX offers over the two other aforementioned phone systems.
